Half Life Lab

Today in class we did a Half Life lab, but because our teacher had a headache we resorted to pieces of paper to represent radioactive atoms instead of the obnoxiously noisy pennies that are traditionally used in classrooms abroad. What we did is we cut a 12" by 12" piece of paper into 576 1/2" squares, which is an extremely tedious task, and placed them into a cup. We then dumped them out and counted the number of squares that were faced up still. Then those were put back into the cup and this process was repeated 5 times. This is supposed to represent how the process of radioactive decay works.

Isotopes quiz

Today we took a quiz over atoms and isotopes. This quiz was rather easy until the last 8 questions where we were asked about historic scientists and their influence on the discoveries of the atom. I had paid so much attention to the actual material and manipulating the formula I didn't really go over the scientists and their impacts much during my studying. I remembered a fair amount about them during our lesson in class but I will definitely remember to go over them a few times before any more quizzes and tests from here on out during this unit.

Isotopes lesson

Today in class we learned about the composition of isotopes. I do remember learning these things freshman year but I did not actually retain the information so it was nice to go over it again. This information would've made the pretest last week significantly easier.

nomenclature pt. 2

Test review

During the nomenclature unit, I was very surprised my my test grades. I was at mastery for all types of naming on the quiz but must have made many simple mistakes in my confidence on the actual quiz because I did not receive mastery on 3 of the subunits on the Nomenclature quiz. This was actually a rather humbling experience because before this I thought this class was going to be a piece of cake,; nevertheless, I was wrong.
