It is important to identify the correct plants/roots correctly because if one were to falsely identify a poisonous plant as a non-poisonous plant they might put that plant into their body and do themselves and potentially others more harm.
It is important to know a variety of species of plants from different habitats because an emergency could happen at anytime and it would be helpful to know about the plant life around you wherever you are.
It would make a significant difference if you were traveling in different seasons because different plants are in bloom during different parts of the year.
It would be very crucial that scientists keep a good relationship with the people of the areas that they're studying because they might have more personal experiences with the plants and be able to give the scientists tips on where to find different plants or what time of the year they can find them.
If I was found without modern medicine, I do not believe I would trust my personal knowledge of native flora but I definitely would trust my reference texts to help me identify different plants and cure different ailments. This is because I have not spent much time studying plants personally but my reference texts are completely constructed of plant research and carry way more knowledge about the subject than I do.
